A Few Cans Of Food And Some Bottles Of Water

Should we prepare to survive in this world or prepare for eternity?

A few cans of food and some bottles of water
A gun in your hand and a garden out back
A way to protect your wife, son, and daughter
In your wilderness one-room lean-to shack

Dark clouds above have warned you of doom
In the corner is your food and water stash
As you sit anxiously in your single room
You wait for the coming thunder crash

How did you come to this desperate place?
You’re with your family but you’re alone
You quit your job and the city rat race
And settled in this simple one-room home

Many others have followed your lead
Although they still live in the cities
They desire their families to feed
And have formed survival committees

But out of the fear and desperation
A voice arises and calls for attention:
“When the world is overrun by desolation,
What will happen to your survival pretension?

“You know that everyone will finally die
Shouldn’t you prepare for death rather than life
Eternity is what the philosophers spy
You cannot save yourself, let alone your wife

“Your mind is what will be revealed
When you leave your body and this earth
Have you attacked or have you healed?
What is your true value and worth?

“Don’t be distracted by the attempt to save
The few belongings that you now cherish
Don’t worry about them or be their slave
For all things in this world will someday perish

“But if you learn to love your foes
Your heart will expand and grow warm
Love will follow your soul wherever it goes
And serenity will be your new norm

“Look at all of those cans of food
What have they represented?
I don’t mean to sound rude
But that is what your fear invented

“Let your fear go and share your wealth
Don’t be selfish and ego-centered
Giving ensures wholeness and health
When love has your heart entered

“This is the choice that you have to make
Die with a heart full of fear and pain
Or stand up and let your heart awake
And leave this world with eternal gain”
